Lose Weight Using Saffron
Sound crazy? You may have heard about certain spicy hot foods that can increase your metabolism in the short-term and in-turn, increase the rate in which you burn fat. I love spicy food, the hotter the better, but what does saffron do since it’s not spicy hot? Well, there are a number of health benefits saffron does for the body. One notable benefit this exotic spice has, is the ability to suppress your appetite without negative side effects. That’s the beauty of an all-natural, sustainable farmed product such as saffron. The holistic benefits can be superior to synthetic medicines that usually come with negative side effects.
It’s amazing how diverse this spice is. Saffron has been used for centuries by iconic historic figures such as Alexander the Great, Queen Cleopatra, and many others. Although these two used saffron for different reasons, neither to lose weight or to spice food, in today’s society saffron is being used effectively by many as an all-natural weight loss supplement.
How Does Saffron Work to Help You Lose Weight?
Saffron is composed of three main ingredients: crocin (color), picrocrocin (taste), and safranal (fragrance). Clinical studies₁ have shown that saffron (particularly the ingredient crocin) elevates the level of serotonin in your brain, an important neurotransmitter that’s thought to play a role in specific cognitive functions such as: appetite, digestion, sleep, memory, sexual desire, and sexual function. By taking a controlled amount of saffron every day, within a week or two, you’re likely to start to notice some of the benefits mentioned above. Specifically in regard to weight loss, it’s important to mention that saffron can also optimize your metabolic function by accelerating thermogenesis, the production of internal body heat which ultimately burns fat cells. The combination of these two benefits makes this spice truly unique.
Include Saffron into Your Daily Diet
First and foremost, it’s important to ingest the optimal amount of this amazing spice which is based on your body type and dietary intake. This can vary person-to-person, but it’s believed the optimal range is somewhere between 30-400mg of the highest quality saffron you can find per day. I would suggest 150mg twice a day for a total of 300mg per day if you’re goal is to eat less by suppressing your appetite. The other health benefits you’ll realize in the process are a bonus. No side effects, only health wellness bonuses, wow!
The best way to ingest the optimal amount of saffron involves weighing the spice, then grinding it using a mortar and pestle, or by crushing the threads some other way, then steeping the powder into a drink. It can be any type of drink which should be consumed 30 minutes or so before you eat your meal. You should scale your portion down with this in mind. It can take your brain up to 20 minutes to catch up with your stomach’s digestive activity in order to figure out how ‘full’ you are. That’s why dieticians will tell you to eat your food slowly. By enjoying the spice before your meal, you won’t be as hungry when you eat it. You’ll be eating less but still feeling fulfilled.
Saffron, the Happy Spice
Other clinical studies² have shown interesting results in tests comparing placebos, Prozac, and saffron with groups of people that participated in these studies who were diagnosed with moderate depression. The results of those tests showed that both Prozac and saffron were equally successful at treating moderate depression when compared to the placebo group.
